Infinite Tide
Infinite Tide is a generative artwork that visualizes in real time the tidal flow of La Coruña, the city where I was born. Although these works may be anywhere in the world, they will always follow the pulse of the Atlantic, maintaining an eternal bond with their origin.
Year: 2025
Medium:
Generative Algorithm, custom computer, high resolution 4” screen.
Each piece is unique and generates an extensive cartography of lines, a map of currents unfolding on the screen. The animation invites us on a journey through this cartography, revealing new corners as it progresses. Explores its sea of lines until it reaches its limits, at which point it returns to the center to embark on a new course, revealing another part of its map in an endless cycle of discovery.
The synchronization with the tides dictates not only the flow of the piece but also its visual density. The lines reach their maximum thickness during high tide, filling every gap like the sea at full tide covering the coast. During low tide, the lines thin out and the drawing empties, leaving wide spaces between them, like the receding water revealing the shore.
The algorithm is anchored to me and my city. It autonomously calculates the tides using lunar cycles and harmonic data from the coast of A Coruña, measured by the tide gauge at the Calvo Sotelo dock in the port of A Coruña.
Since the tides are constantly changing, I will check and update the data at least once a year and update a file in my studio, The algorithm will read this file to ensure it remains precisely synchronized with the tides of my city. As long as I exist, the artwork will remain faithful to the rhythm of the Atlantic. But when I can no longer do this, when my connection to this sea fades, it will drift, slowly losing its accuracy—like a current without direction, carried away by time.
“Infinite Tide” is available in various formats, from small screens to large installations. It is part of a series of digital objects, each with its own unique cartography. It is a living map anchored to its origin, which—even if it one day drifts away—will continue exploring the Atlantic of my memory.
